Part 3 – We Thirst
– Pastor Steve Logan –
Last week we spoke of the great waters and how God fought for Israel at the camp of the Red Sea. This brings us up to the fourth camp of Israel, Marah, meaning bitter waters. What shall we drink? We thirst and what can quench this desire? Such yearning and such longing. Such dry, empty words can’t describe the hunger and the thirst, the burning lust, the wantonness, the cry, the agony, the anguish in their destitute poverty and brokenness.
A cry of longing began to usher forth a travail as in the latter moments of birth; faster and much more intense. Then the Lord gave them another glimpse of His salvation. They saw a tree. The thoughts lingered! A tree which would be cut down and drug to the very place where it was lifted up and cast into the bitter waters. This death would cause them to be changed transforming the bitter waters into a life source. Refreshing, sweet waters to drink! Fountains to revive! A refreshing, a reawakening! Content, satisfied, gratified!
Then the Lord began to speak, And said, “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26).
